For a summary of what we heard, please view our "What we Heard" engagement summary.

The Leongatha Railway Precinct is a historic site, originally built in the late 1800s and used as a train station until the early 1990s. Since closure of the railway line in 1993, the Precinct has been vacant and now is being transformed into a space for all to enjoy.

This South Gippsland Shire Council project, which will be managed by Arts Eleven, will transform the blank canvas of the railway precinct, into a vibrant masterpiece that will capture the imagination of residents and visitors alike.

As part of the Leongatha Railway Precinct redevelopment, the South Gippsland Arts Advisory Committee, Arts Eleven and Council's Art Development Officer have narrowed down the extremely competitive list of interested artists down to just three.

Their concepts have been developed in response to the brief provided and reflect a diverse range of styles, themes and artistic expressions. Now it is up to the residents of South Gippsland and surrounding areas to make their voices heard and choose the artist/s who will bring the Leongatha Railway Precinct to life.

The Brief

Artists were required to base their concepts on the theme of 'Leongatha and its Landscape', and respond to the natural world surrounding the site.

A focus on the region's vast and beautiful natural bushland, native plants, trees, birdlife and fauna was encouraged. It is expected the murals will be a contemporary take on these elements rather than recreate the type of historical murals previously seen across the region.

About the Artists

Click on each of the names below to see examples of their work.

Ash Taylor

Ash's work aims to combine ecologically relevant species with contemporary design principles and engaging colours. Her illustrative style of work aims to bring the surrounding natural environment to life through vibrant and energetic pallets.

Yuria Okamura and Jack Rowland

Melbourne-based artists whose talents when combined, showcase geometric abstraction and contemporary landscapes resulting in works that visualise connectivity and harmony of the natural world.

Creature Creature and Jason Parker

Creature Creature's art is a convergence of Asian aesthetics and style with a Western perspective, resulting in works brimming with contrast and fluidity. Whilst Jason Parker's work focuses closely on the subject matter of Flora, enhanced through the bold use of colour. The collaboration will see the subject of local Flora and Fauna seamlessly contrasted through the blending of two very distinctive styles.

The chosen artist/s will receive a commission to create the mural and will work closely with South Gippsland Shire Council and local stakeholders to bring their vision to life.

We are looking to you, our community, to make the final decision on which artist/s will be given the opportunity to transform this space. To do that, please complete the short survey here before Thursday 20 July 2023.

Please Note: A limit of one vote per person applies.
