In South Gippsland Shire, over 1,000 households are in housing stress. They pay more than 30 per cent of their household income on housing leaving limited income for other expenses like food, transport, health, education and utilities.

To help support South Gippslanders who find themselves in need of social or affordable housing, Council have created a draft Social and Affordable Housing Strategy. This strategy highlights the opportunities we have at Council to support more social and affordable housing, including advocating for services and supporting providers of social and affordable housing to invest in South Gippsland.

So far, we have engaged with:

  • Key stakeholders such as regional service providers, State Government agencies and other local governments.
  • People with lived experience of housing stress and risk of homelessness.
  • Organisations with land and interest in offering affordable housing.
  • Extensive community consultation as part of the Integrated Plan engagement.
