Heritage Precincts Project

South Gippsland Shire Council is undertaking a heritage precinct review of four key locations: Loch, Fish Creek and Toora town centres, and the Radovick Street residential area in Korumburra. We are proposing to introduce a Heritage Overlay precinct control to groups of properties in these areas. The goal is to ensure that as our townships grow, the unique history and charm that makes these towns special is preserved for future generations. Without clear planning protections, there is a risk that the character of our streetscapes could be eroded by inappropriate or generic development.

Each of the four townships are located on the Great Southern Rail Trail. Protecting the urban character of our Rail Trail townships will assist in protecting this valuable tourism asset and support economic development.

To commence our community engagement, draft Heritage Precinct boundaries (see links) have been prepared for each township. These plans include draft property gradings which identify the level of significance of a building to a precinct. We want to talk to landowners so we can customise the Heritage Overlay controls to protect the precinct and also reduce the impact of controls on landowners.

Council has heritage studies and previously completed precinct statements which will assist you understand the heritage significance of the proposed precinct. Also provided are examples of heritage precinct controls that have been implemented in other planning schemes. Heritage information on individual buildings can also be found on the Heritage Victoria website.

• Toora – Thursday 14 May 6.00pm to 7.30pm at Toora Community Hall (Committee Room) 23 Grey Street. Toora space will be limited due to room size.
